‘Strategic thinking doesn’t change’: Are marketing degrees fit for purpose?

In the first of our new State of Academia series, we ask how useful are marketing degrees in preparing students for the realities of the role?

There’s a lot to get your head around if you want to be a successful marketer, so it’s no surprise gaining a marketing qualification is seen as a useful route into the industry.

Marketing Week’s exclusive 2025 Career & Salary Survey data finds nearly three-quarters of marketers (71.2%) believe having a marketing qualification has helped them or others to advance in their careers. Just a fifth (22.6%) of the more than 3,500 respondents believe having a marketing-specific qualification made no difference to progression. Little wonder prospective marketers are flocking to marketing-specific degrees in increasing numbers.

Data from HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency) shows the number of students enrolled in marketing qualifications has been steadily increasing over the last five years.
