Sustainability in Fashion

Sustainability isn’t just a passing trend; it’s a fundamental belief that reshapes our approach to business, emphasizing the importance of caring for both our people and our planet. Unfortunately, many major corporations still prioritize profit over sustainability, neglecting the urgent need for change. In 2015, the United Nations unveiled 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at fostering peace, prosperity, and environmental stewardship.

These goals address pressing issues such as climate change, ocean preservation, and forest conservation. Nowhere is the call for sustainable practices more critical than in the fashion industry, where a staggering 92 million tons of textiles end up in landfills each year (Ruiz, 2024). Moreover, approximately 20% of industrial water pollution stems from textile manufacturing processes (Chen, 2019). To move forward, the fashion industry must embrace the principles outlined in the SDGs and prioritize sustainable practices that mitigate environmental harm while ensuring a prosperous future for all.

In our current age, Generation Z stands out as the generation most deeply committed to environmental concerns. Their potential to drive essential change positions environmental consciousness at the forefront of societal priorities, prompting industries worldwide to adopt sustainability as a central guiding principle. Among these sectors, the fashion industry has found itself under intense scrutiny due to its historically significant environmental footprint. However, amidst the uproar for change emerges a path of hope: Eco-conscious fashion.

At HiTechMODA we understand the importance of aligning our practices with the UN’s definition of sustainable fashion. Additionally, our commitment is evident in our curation of a sustainable runway that not only showcases cutting-edge designs but also prioritizes environmental and social responsibility. Among our prominent sustainable designers are House of Musa, By Sarasty, and Alyssia Sutherland’s brand, Ally’s Ribbons.

House of Musa, Owned by Joy Soo, Philippines, USA Registered License Holder, Cindy Mac, has made waves in the fashion industry with their innovative use of materials such as banana fiber. Sue’s altruistic endeavors extend beyond mere fashion, as she empowers indigenous women in Davao del Norte, Philippines, by providing them with opportunities to engage in fabric weaving and artistic expression. This not only promotes sustainable practices but also fosters social inclusivity and empowerment within the community.

Similarly, By Sarasty, founded by Camila Sarasty, emphasizes sustainability through the use of recycled fabrics and environmentally conscious manufacturing processes. Sarasty’s designs, showcased at prestigious events like New York Fashion Week, not only captivate audiences with their beauty but also serve as a testament to the possibility of creating high-end fashion with minimal environmental impact.

Alyssia Sutherland’s brand, Ally’s Ribbons, is a testament to her commitment to sustainable fashion rooted in her Native American Indigenous heritage. Inspired by the tradition of ribbon skirts and guided by organizations like Ka Ni Kanichihk, Sutherland infuses modernity into this centuries-old art form. Through locally sourced materials and traditional craftsmanship, she not only preserves cultural identity but also champions sustainability. Dressing notable figures like Ashley Callingbull, Fawn Wood, and Crystle Lightning, Sutherland’s designs resonate with pride, resilience, and a profound connection to Indigenous culture and the environment.
