Most marketers believe strategic expertise ‘underrated’ by business

Almost two-thirds of 2025 Career & Salary Survey respondents – and nearly three quarters of CMOs – believe marketing strategy is undervalued.

Underrated

Businesses are undervaluing the importance of strategic marketing skills, according to almost two-thirds of marketers.

Some 64% of the more than 3,500 respondents to Marketing Week’s exclusive 2025 Career & Salary Survey believe companies undervalue the importance of marketing strategy, rising to 73% of CMOs/marketing directors/vice-presidents.

This is the third year running the Career & Salary Survey sample has identified marketing strategy as the most undervalued skill, suggesting respect for the strategic prowess of marketing is still not recognised by all.
