After all the hype and expectation, a fairly tepid end to Google’s protracted battle with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) over its dominance in online search on Tuesday (2 September).

Google has avoided the worst possible ruling of being forced to spin off its Chrome business – as was pushed for by the DOJ in November 2024 – but will be required to share search information with competitors and is barred from having exclusive contracts for its products.

The remedies suggested by Judge Amit Mehta come after a years-long court battle over whether Google’s dominance in the search market constituted a monopoly or not.
